Plot: Set against the action-packed world of Mixed Martial Arts, NEVER BACK DOWN is the story of Jake Tyler, a tough kid who leads with his fists, and, often, with his heart. Jake Tyler, played by Sean Far...( read more read more... )is, is the new kid in town with a troubled past. He has recently moved to Orlando, Florida with his family who has relocated to support his younger brother's shot at a professional tennis career. Jake was a star athlete on the football team at home, but in this new city he is an outsider with a reputation for being a quick tempered brawler.

Making an attempt to fit in, at the invitation of a flirtatious classmate, Baja (Amber Heard), Jake goes to a party where he is unwittingly pulled into a fight with a bully named Ryan McDonald (Cam Gigandet). While he is defeated and humiliated in the fight, a classmate introduces himself to Jake and tells him about the sport known as Mixed Marshall Arts (MMA). He sees a star in Jake and asks that he meet with his mentor, Jean Roqua, played by Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond, In America).

It is immediately apparent to Jake that MMA is not street fighting, but rather an art form he wants to master. Roqua will take Jake under his wing, but it is up to Jake to find the patience, discipline, willingness and reason within him to succeed. For Jake, there is much more at stake than mere victory. His decision will not just settle a score; it will define who he is.

The action is done well, however the story is weak. It is SO pradictable. The acting is not good and the script kinda suced. Just look at the fight sceans on you tube. This being my brother and his friends favorite movie is sad.

The backstory concepts and points had the potential to be effective, but the overall direction was so poorly done. The director wanted to focus more on pop culture (youtube, pointless and tangential bullshit, etc.) which didn't add anything to the film except for wrong perceptions.

Ok movie. Extremely predictable but the fight scene's are worth it. Worth a rental if your an MMA fan otherwise don't bother.

80% of this movie I was cringing and wincing. Not because the fights are brutal (they arent), not because the angst and emotion is well performed (it isnt) but because this pretty boy Sean Farris punk looks like a seventeen year old Tom Cruise.

The characters are all incredibly hateable, with the exception of Djimon (Didgi-mon?) Hounsou. The plot blanket thats thrown over them dosent help. "Troubled teen learns the values of life and betters himself with a glistning happy ending while getting the girl who fell in love with him after they met for fifteen seconds". Added to that, theres the embaressment of what I guess is supposed to be a funny sidekick who admires the hero because he saw a video on the internet of him knocking out some dickhead on the footy field.

But amongst all the cheesy lines, the terrible characters, the cliche's and the predictibility, one crime stands tall amongst all the others. I dont know whether it was supposed to be a "running homage" or a subtle reference or whatever, but this rival guy, is essentially just trying his hardest to be Tyler Durden (Fight Club). He talks like Durden, moves like Durden and steals all his little speeches diectly from Durden. It was really shitty to watch. If this is supposed to bring Fight Club to a new generation then it has done a pissweak job. Fight Club grapples with major social issues and morality, Never Back Down grapples with teenage angst. Hardley a fitting transcendance.

Never Back Down, whether it was supposed to be or not, is geared directly at the following types of people. Anyone who thinks "Step Up" is a masterpiece. Weak minded girls who faint over a hard bodied dude even if he's a total douche. Young boy's who fancy themselves arse kickers because they write about it on their blog. And people who point and laugh at failures. I like to point and laugh. And feel a little saddened inside.

I found this quite entertaining. The fight scenes were intense. It took Jake long enough to learn to control his anger. Sean Faris looks like Tom Cruise.

This movie is nothing like Fight Club. Anyone who says it is has never seen Fight Club or didn't understand it when they did.
This is a copy of Karate Kid pure and simple with the addition of MMA fighting. It's a simple movie about getting back at the bully that beat you up at the beginning of the flick. It's not meant to be any deeper than that. Just sit back and have fun with it and stop analyzing it to death.

Are you kidding me? This steaming piece of donkey shit aimed at teenage MMA "fans" is "like Fight Club"? I just watched Fight Club again to make sure, but Fight Club is NOT about fighting. If you think Fight Club is about fighting, then you're as dense as a lead baseball cap.

Yes, the underlying plots are different, but the whole fight plot is a plaguarism of Fight Club.

this film is actually nothin like fight club? yeh, it has a place where people go and fight but that is it? the story line is different, everything is different, its more of an up to date karate kid, which in my eyes is a sick idea, this film was really good maybe the beginning of martial art movies again lol

It seems to me, from description and adverts, that this is going to be a rip off of fight club.

hell, he even has a similar name! Tyler Durden-Fight Club
    Jake Tyler-Never Back Down.

plus iv'e heard the line "im angry all the time" in a film before. now i'm not saying this is patented to one film, but it sure does reminde me of when it was spoken in "Crash".
