Plot: Two business rivals hate each other at the office but fall in love over the internet.
I love this kind of romantic comedies movies, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are the best couple in movies! Very funny, disstracting, and the music was like watching an SNOOPY cartoon episode!! Lovely.
I like every actor in this movie. The story itself is a little silly but it's executed well and the dialogue is great.
Thought it ends up with another Golden Globe nod for Meg Ryan only, we can't deny how good Tom Hanks was in romance film, especially how natural and spontaneous he could be.
Now I know why Meg Ryan is such a sweetheart for all Americans. She is confidently beautiful!
The opening scenes just like Turn Left Turn Right from HK many years later.
I feel good at the ending. This is a rare film with nice storyline and fantastic movie songs. I love and I am going to buy the soundtrack.
Trivias from imdb.com:-
This is the third time that Meg and Tom act together, the previous two being: Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) and Sleepless in Seattle (1993).
The scene where Joe accidentally closes the door of Kathleen's shop on the balloons was unscripted. Tom Hanks actually did that, and adlibbed the line, "Good thing it wasn't the fish." The director thought it was so funny that she kept it in.
US box office collection amounted to $115,731,542.
Rated 3 stars by Roger Ebert.
this flim is aighyt but not a flim i can watch over and over again and brag about that it is so good
just can't get enough of these two.. hehehe :D i like this movie better than sleepless in seattle though..
You've Got Mail takes romance and feel-good film cliches, and handles them refreshingly, intelligently and believably with a witty and bouncy script and style, heavily developed characters and is full of nice details, particularly how in love the meaningless becomes meaningful.
The plot is vaguely reminiscent of the 1940 film The Shop Around The Corner, enemies who unwittingly fall in love through the written word, and nods its head to this, but the romance in You've Got Mail is far more central to the plot and the situations and set-up are completely different. Kathleen owns a friendly children's bookshop, and Joe owns part of a big bad chain store that threatens to swallow Kathleen's simple existence whole, causing Joe to suffer for the pain he causes the woman he loves. This makes Joe a fascinating romantic lead. He is a callous businessman, but with depth and humour as a person. His horror at discovering his anonymous lover is his enemy, the inner turmoil bubbling beneath his eyes for what he has done and his desperation to befriend her and be forgiven when he knows it is too late is all superbly acted by Tom Hanks. Rom-com leads usually go from enemies to lovers, and it is wonderful to see the friendship stage actually broached for once.
The film balances humour and wistfulness with heartbreaking despair, depths not usually covered by rom-coms, as Kathleen must watch all her efforts fail as she loses her mother's shop. It is also pleasing that Kathleen's relationship with boyfriend Frank comes to a natural end, rather than the usual dumping that goes on in such films, and both this relationship and that between Joe and girlfriend Patricia are cleverly set up to show why the couples are together, but that there is no possibility of the long term for them.
However, the ending irritatingly sabotages You've Got Mail's chances of being a classic. Once Kathleen loses her shop, the film switches almost entirely to Joe's perspective, as he tries to become her friend. This throws off the delicate balance that has been the structure so far. And then the last scene, in which Kathleen waits to meet her anonymous lover and is presented with Joe, doesn't work. The 'surprise' tactic is tasteless, as is confirmed by Kathleen bursting into tears, not really the happy ending desired, but instead of these two witty, intelligent and deep people, so recently bitter enemies but now close friends, discussing the coincidence, irony and subterfuge of this situation, they kiss.
One of the best rom-coms made, but the ending brutally stops it being perfect.
what can i say, i'm a sucker for the funny version of tom and the antics of meg, and thought the chemistry was fantastic. i can't explain it, but i loved it!
not really that much of a sensation...i don't know what the fuss was all about...but the story is not that good
Of course I've seen it before, only this time I understand all The Godfather and Joni Mitchell references. This movie is just magical fun. No on-screen couple has more chemistry than Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
Havent seen it... dont plan on seeing it purposely... but not closed to watching it!! LOL figure that one out!!!
Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) is involved with a newspaper writer for the New York Observer Frank Navasky (Greg Kinnear) is devoted to his typewriter but Kathleen prefers her laptop. Kathleen uses the avatar "Shopgirl" communicates with "NY152" is the avatar for Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) thru the Internet to continue their courtship. Joe belongs to the Fox Family owns Fox & Sons Bookstore & Kathleen owns bookstore: The Shop Around The Corner. Joe discovered Shopgirl's true identity is actually Kathleen Kelly. "NY152" (Joe Fox) "Shopgirl" (Kathleen Kelly) agree to meet 1 more time. Joe & his dog Brinkley meet Kathleen at Riverside Park when Kathleen cry as Joe & Kathleen kiss in the park with Brinkley the golden retiever.
I like Tom Hanks and I like Meg Ryan (as evidenced by my ridiculous love of Joe Vs. the Volcano) but this is drivel.
The best romantic comedy of the ninetees. Hanks and Ryan have great chemistry and are wonderful together.
A pale imitation of When Harry Met Sally, and thatiisn't saying much. Nothing more boring than watching lovers emailing each other. (Done much better in Something's Gotta Give).
I liked the original with James Stewart, but I also like this one very much.. main reason: Ryan and Hanks.. who are just perfect together!
Meg Ryan has played the same role in just about every film she has done. I'm not saying it's bad, just the same. Lots of practice will get you there I guess.
I've watched this twice now and both times my mind wandered. I think it should be appealing but for some reason it is executed very badly.
Ahh, L'amour - nothing is too cliche when you're alone and you've got your wine and bon bons to keep you company.
We all know how it's going to end - but it makes us happy to go along for the ride anyway so we keep getting on.
Hanks and Ryan always a great pairing, though you can forget about your husband sitting through yet another version of the same "great" thing.
romantic twist onthe whole internet romance theme, im guessnig internet relationships would have sky roketed after this movie came out
Very predicatble, similar to Sleepless in Seattle - the characters don't know each other but are destined to meet. They chat via email, but don't realise they loathe each other in real life.

I recently re-watched this movie and the scene where Tom Hanks is talking about what you order at Starbucks can define you struck me. It got me to wondering-should I be concerned that I am a tall, toffee NUT mocha?
Love Tom Hanks is an angel with Meg in this film, f...o...x, the little boy is so cute, and the songs of frank sinatra awesome!!
