Michael Phelps Carrie Underwood Dating: Carrie Underwood Michael Phelps Planning “Quiet First Date” Aug 28, 2008 SexiVixxEN Other Fourteen Olympic medals has superhuman swimmer Michael Phelps looking very good to country singing star Carrie Underwood. Michael was over the moon after hearing a rumor that the one-time American Idol thinks he is “cute.” According to celebrity tattles on-site at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, the twentysomethings are frequently texting each other and have already begun planning a “quiet first date” near Carrie’s home in Nashville, Tennessee. An excited Michael is hoping there won’t be too much eating involved on this outing. The 23-year-old athlete told Carrie, “I’m not so sure you’d want to see me eat! It might not make a great first impression.” “Carrie needs someone who is going to stick by her,” a skeptical pal of Carrie’s revealed to the National Enquirer. “She was devastated when her relationship with Tony Romo broke. The last thing she needs is a relationship with another high-profile celebrity who’s going to end up loving and leaving her.”

Max Makowski to Direct Voltron Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other Earlier this month we reported that Relativity had scooped up the gestating Voltron movie from 20th Century Fox (nice move) with plans to make it with a “more moderate budget, utilizing the type of cost-effective technology employed in films including 300.” Latino Review (huge Voltron fans) report tonight that Max Makowski, a general unknown, is set to direct the nostalgic robot actioner. Makowsi is currently attached to direct the revamp of Kung Fu, due in 2009, and he’s best known for the 2005 Sundance assassins flick, One Last Dance, co-starring Harvey Keitel. Haven’t seen it, neither has LR. IMDB: 6.0. Here’s the trailer. Other films he’s attached to, in a writing or directing capacity, include Shinobi and Hawaii Five-O. A while ago, LR memorably referred to the script by the buzzing Justin Marks (Hack/Slash, Street Fighter: Chun Li) as a “****** masterpiece.” I’ve got it, need to read it. Logline: “a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico which follows five ragtag survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth’s invaders.” I’ve been pretty amped to see this film for years, and the early word parlays that Makowski’s visual acumen will set it apart from Transformers. Playing it loose sans a $100 million budget and with a risky hotshot actually ups my anticipation.
Coen Brothers’ Burn After Reading Gets Middling Early Reviews Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other The balloon of blind faith gifted the Coen Brothers after No Country For Old Men (and many other great films) by critics and bloggers is beginning to sputter across the Netz. The bros’ new CIA kneeslapper Burn After Reading starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt is receiving decidely mixed early word-of-mouth and reviews from the Venice Film Fest. “Everything here, from the thesps’ heavy mugging to the uncustomarily overbearing score by Carter Burwell and the artificially augmented vulgarities in the dialogue, has been dialed up to an almost grotesquely exaggerated extent, making for a film that feels misjudged. …Nothing about the project’s execution inspires the feeling that this was ever intended as anything more than a lark, which would be fine if it were a good one. As it is, audience teeth-grinding sets in early and never lets up.” - Variety “Joel and Ethan Coen clearly are in a prankish mood, knocking out a minor piece of silliness with all the trappings of an A-list studio movie. Those who relish this movie might treat it as the second coming of “The Big Lebowski”; those who don’t might wonder at a story in which no character has a level head.” - The Hollywood Reporter Word of mouth… “I’ve spoken to another critic who saw it and was asking himself as he watched the first two acts, ‘Why am I not laughing?’” - Jeff Wells jus’ sayin’ The Guardian was seemingly pleased with the film, but they also refer to it as an “afterthought”… “Burn After Reading may also go down as arguably the Coens’ happiest engagement with the demands of the Hollywood A-list - but this bit of career development may also be contributing to a diminishing of their particular film-making strengths. …in comparison [to NCFOM], [the film is a] bit of a bantamweight: fast moving, lots of attitude, and uncorking a killer punch when it can.” Personally, I’ve seen Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski countless times, but I casually walked out on both The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty. When Clooney does cheeky comedy, it rarely gels—he often reminds me of a pillow trying to be funny, weird, right?—while the pics of Brad Pitt’s hair are too overly stylized Beavis for my liking. And yet the cast undeniably slays: Tilda Swinton, John Malkovich, JK Simmons, Richard Jenkins and Frances McDormand. We’ll be there, what about you?
Jennifer Aniston NBC Guest Appearance Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other Jennifer Aniston is in discussions with NBC executives to make a guest appearance on one of the network’s popular sitcoms or dramas. The unlucky-in-love Aniston shot to fame playing waitress “Rachel Green” on the iconic NBC series Friends between 1994-2004. “She’s in talks to have a guest spot on one of their high-profile shows,” an OK! insider claims. “The top choice is 30 Rock, but if that doesn’t work out, they’ll try to find another show for her to make an appearance on.”

Helmer slates "plastic" Guy Ritchie films Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other Daylight Robbery director Paris Leonti has dismissed Guy Ritchie's gangster films as "plastic". Leonti, whose debut movie revolves around a group of England football fans who use the World Cup as cover to rob a London bank, was keen to distance himself from Ritchie's work. He told the Press Association: "I like to think that I'm nowhere near Guy Ritchie. As I said before, Guy Ritchie makes plastic gangster films. He writes about characters that [are] caricatures. Whereas mine are real characters, they are actually London boys, they're robbing a bank. "It's the real thing and hopefully when people watch it they will appreciate what I'm trying to do. I am trying to change people's minds on all these over-played, exaggerated gangster movies." Daylight Robbery is released tomorrow, while Ritchie's latest crime drama RocknRolla arrives in UK cinemas on September 5.
New Ghost Town Images Aug 28, 2008 SexiVixxEN Other Ricky Gervais has moved on from being harassed by half-wit office works and accosted by sex-crazed Hollywood celebrities (I’m looking at you Patrick Stewart), to being bothered by annoying ghosts in Ghost Town. One of the ghosts looks a lot like Greg Kinnear, so perhaps this is really just a high-concept episode of Extras after all. Ghost Town hits theaters in September and Paramount has handed us a big stack of new stills from the film. Click the image below to hit our expansive image gallery:
John Noble Not Interested The Hobbit Aug 28, 2008 SexiVixxEN Other While most of the Lord of the Rings cast has been adamant about being ready and willing to do just about anything Peter Jackson wants, there’s at least one castmember who won’t be involved in the two Hobbit movies he’s currently making. John Noble tells MTV that he’s got better things to do. Noble played Denethor, the crazed Steward of Gondor in the Lord of the Rings series. This character has nothing to do with the first movie Jackson and director Guillermo del Toro are making, since it’s based on The Hobbit, and they never go anywhere near Gondor in it. But the second movie they are doing involves all sorts of ancillary material, and takes place between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. Denethor could end up playing a key figure in whatever the LOTR team is cooking. Noble though says, “If they said, ‘Would you come and play Denethor again, I would have to say, ‘No, I’m doing [new J.J. Abrams television series] ‘Fringe’! And I certainly couldn’t play a younger Denethor or even Echelion now that I’m an older John. Not even with makeup.” I’m not sure his age is really an obstacle, he’s only a couple of years older and if they needed his character he’d only really be a couple of years younger. Hollywood effects should be able to handle that level of wizardry. And, speaking as someone who has already seen the pilot episode of Fringe… I don’t think Noble has to worry about it keeping him very busy. John Noble is fantastic in it, in fact he’s the best thing about it, but the rest of the show is a disaster and he’ll be lucky if it isn’t cancelled after the first week.
Kevin Federline Britney Spears Battle Over Sons Showbusiness Careers Aug 28, 2008 SexiVixxEN Other The custody fight between Britney Spears and Kevin Federline may be over but successful co-parenting isn’t on the horizon for the exes anytime soon. The former couple are at war over Kev’s plans to manage showbusiness careers for sons Sean Preston and Jayden. The backup dancing reject can’t wait to turn Brit’s boys into the next generation of child star screwups. Kevin has been secretly shuttling Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden, 1, to television and film auditions around the City of Angels. “He thinks it would be a good outlet for them. Preston and Jayden are always singing and dancing around the house. They’re total clowns, even at their toddler playground, Mr. Gym.” Well “Mama” isn’t having it. Britney wants her sons to have the childhood that was lost to her and will not encourage any interest Kevin has in introducing them to the entertainment industry. Britney, who has been performing professionally since the age of eight, “blew up when Kevin asked her about letting the kids act,” a Star Magazine spywitness whispers. Britney “doesn’t want them to be used as cash cows.” Kevin disagrees. “Kevin feels it’s okay as long as they are watched over carefully and not pushed into it,” the tabloid insider explains. “Kevin hopes Britney will come around when she realizes how much fun they’re having.” Do you think Britney and Kevin’s sons are too young for showbusiness?
Mark Wahlberg Says Max Payne > The Dark Knight635 Aug 28, 2008 SexiVixxEN Other Another morning on Slashfilm, another Kid Icarus in Hollywood. Previously, Robert Downey Jr. used the web to hawk an Iron loogie at The Dark Knight and DC Comics, and now Mark Wahlberg—who enjoys lighting cigarettes in the rain—says he’d pummel The Caped Crusader. Put down the Pop Tarts and take a deep breath, fanboys. “I’m not talking about financial box office, I’m talking about one-on-one with these [puts up fists],” Wahlberg squealed to MTV while flexing in front of a mirror. We interrupt this quote to bring you a witty message from ODB. And we’re back. Moreover, Wahlberg offered a direct and slightly ‘mo challenge to Bruce Wayne… “Take off the suit and if you want to go one-on-one, two-on-one, and put a couple of you guys together—they all like to put the comic book characters together—come at me.” Who is he calling “they”?! Of course, this braggadocio is in reference to October’s Max Payne, the PG-13 adaptation of Rockstar Games‘ framed cop-shoot ‘em up franchise. “I guarantee you there’s not a badder dude in a movie this year than Max Payne. This is like my characters from The Departed, Fear, Four Brothers, all mixed into one, times ten.” Wait a second, Fear? Mebbs he has a point. Discuss: Should Christian Bale bother retorting in front of a mirror? Chris O’Donnell? /Film reader, Jones Johnson, says, “Nobody’s badder than Michael Jackson. …I have doubts.” /Film reader, Reggie, nicely references Walhberg as “a white dwarf heading for a black hole.”
Why Won't Alex Proyas Direct 'Silver Surfer'? Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other You have to feel bad for the Silver Surfer. Everyone else is getting their own spin-off and franchise, and he can't even get the green-light. J. Michael Straczynski already said that his script was dead, but rumors continued to swirl that Alex Proyas was attached to direct. But as reported by Slashfilm, Proyas shot that down at ComicCon. He didn't even know where the rumor originated. And while he's very fond of the character, he told MTV this week that he will never even consider directing a Silver Surfer movie. Why? "Because it's a Fox picture. And I'm determined never to work with them ever again because of my experience on I,Robot." Nor is he happy with the way the character was handled in Fantastic Four 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer. "It's like the origin of Silver Surfer was in that movie, and I'm going, 'This is such a f–king great story, why throw it away? I think they messed it up ... Silver Surfer would have been something I would have loved to have done. He's one of the last cool ones left, really." Who knows -- maybe Fox will relinquish the rights to the Fantastic Four characters (it's not like they're using them), and Proyas will not only get to direct a comic book movie, but fans will get a Silver Surfer movie from someone who really gets the character. But with all the studios jealously guarding their franchises, we'll probably see a Fantastic Four reboot before we see the Silver Surfer in the hands of someone that cares.
EXCLUSIVE: Brand-New Poster for Ridley Scott's 'Body of Lies'! Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other There's a lot of cinematic power behind Warner Bros. upcoming political thriller Body of Lies: It's directed by Oscar-winner Ridley Scott (Gladiator), it's written by Oscar-winner William Monahan (The Departed), and it stars reliable talents / big-time movie stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. Based on the novel by David Ignatius, Body of Lies tells the story of a journalist who is enlisted by the CIA to help track down a suspected terrorist. That's only the sketchiest of plot synopses, but since I haven't read the book, I'd like to enjoy Body of Lies without knowing the whole story. And we're very pleased to bring you the very first look at the official one-sheet for Body of Lies. (It's behind the jump!) The film hits theaters on October 10 -- and since it's a Ridley Scott film, you just know I'll be there opening night. If it's half as good as Mr. Scott's last "action" film (the stellar Black Hawk Down), then I'll be a happy guy.
Author, Director, Distributor, Academics Respond at Length to 'Towelhead' Protest Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other As Eric wrote yesterday, the upcoming dark comedy Towelhead is facing a protest from an Islamic group because of its title, which is perceived as derogatory and a racial slur. Not only is the film's distributor, Warner Independent, sticking by the title, but they have issued a press release containing lengthy, candid, and sometimes even moving responses to the controversy from: 1) Alicia Erian, the author of the original novel; 2) Alan Ball, the director of the film; 3) Warner Independent itself; and 4) a group of theologians. Erian makes pretty much the same argument as Eric did in yesterday's post: that the title serves to highlight the racism its protagonist must contend with. She notes that her novel has been in print for three years and this is the first protest she has received. She also makes the excellent point that "[r]ealistically speaking . . . [people who are likely to use terms like "towelhead" to refer to Muslims] are neither the audience for my book, nor for the film. They will continue to use whatever language they wish whether or not a movie called Towelhead is released." Yes. Ball refers to his own experience facing discrimination as a gay man, and argues that forbidding hateful words only increases their power. The distributor offers an apology but claims to stand by Ball and Erian in the name of free expression of ideas. The scholars note that this is one of the few films to show Islam in a positive light, and call the title "a thought-provoking and difficult term that needs to be deconstructed." You can read the whole thing over at David Poland's blog. So there you go. I agree with the responses on the merits, but I really like the public relations tack Warner Independent has taken here. Honest discussion and argument are so much better than mindless PR spin -- and better PR, too.
'Twin Peaks' Alumna Move On724 Aug 28, 2008 qylecoop Other Two actresses, formerly stars of the bizarre 1990s television show Twin Peaks, have new projects garnering some interest. Sherilyn Fenn, the seductive Lolita-type Audrey Horne of the Peaks series, stars in The Scenesters, a movie in post-production, where she plays an assistant district attorney investigating the work of a serial killer knocking off young hipsters in Los Angeles.

Is Fox Destroying our Favorite Movies? Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other In just the last couple of days, I have heard numerous directors and lots of fans complain about 20th Century Fox and the way they deal with some of their upcoming movies. First, there was "Watchmen." The studio announced that Warner Bros did not have the rights to make the movie and as a result they will do everything in their power to sue, win and then simply throw the movie away. Then, there was "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Director Gavin Hood had a big set built for a scene which he requested to look "dark, dinghy and somber." After being away from his newly designed set for a few days, he returns to find it completely repainted on orders from Fox co-chairman and CEO Tom Rothman. The now different set became brighter and less depressing. The source says that he was utterly surprised to see what has happened. But it is nothing new from Rothman. Then there was "Babylon AD." Director Mathieu Kassovits revealed that 20th Century Fox kept sending their lawyers who made everything difficult. "I never had a chance to do one scene the way it was written or the way I wanted it to be. The script wasn't respected. Bad producers, bad partners, it was a terrible experience." In the end, "Babylon AD," which is based on a French novel "Babylon Babies" by Maurice Georges Dantec, fails to deliver the book's messages. "It's pure violence and stupidity," he admits. "The movie is supposed to teach us that the education of our children will mean the future of our planet. All the action scenes had a goal, instead parts of the movie are like a bad episode of 24. I should have chosen a studio that has guts. I'm ready to go to war against them, but I can't because they don't give a sh*t." And now, there is "The Silver Surfer." It was previously rumored that director Alex Proyas (I, Robot) would go on to helm a "Silver Surfer" spin-off. Proyas recently revealed that he would never consider making that film. But why? "Because it's a Fox picture," he said. "And I'm determined never to work with them ever again because of my experience on 'I,Robot.'" What can be done about a studio like this that's holding rights to some potentially great movies? I don't know for sure, but I can tell you that they got very worried when fans began spreading the message to avoid seeing "Australia," "Wolverine" and other large Fox movies. To appease the fans, Fox has considered letting "Watchmen" go on as planned.
Filmmakers Respond to "Superman" Reboot Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other Last week, Warner Bros announced that they would be interested in rebooting the "Superman" franchise in favor of making it a bit more like "The Dark Knight." The idea is to make the next Superman movie more dark and gritty. Many fans immediately pleaded their cases, but so did the filmmakers. MTV News caught up with writer Christopher Golden (Hellboy, Buffy) and writer/director Kevin Smith on some of their insights. "How stupid is that?" exclaimed Golden. "That announcement made my head spin. 'Iron Man' isn't dark. 'Iron Man' worked because Favreau brought in all the best Iron Man creators and had them read the script and asked them, 'Tell me what we did wrong?' — and it worked because it had all the best things about Iron Man boiled down into the best movie they could make. 'The Dark Knight' was really good because it had all the best things about 'Batman' boiled down into the best movie they could make. Making a dark and gritty Superman movie because Dark Knight made a ton of money is incredibly stupid." Smith is always great for an interesting take or an intelligent analysis. "You always have to always keep Superman very distinct from Batman," he explained. "Batman can be brooding and bleak and dark but Superman — if you want to take a realistic approach to him that's fine, but I don't think you can turn him into an angry character. Superman is about the hope in people, the good in people, whereas Batman is about the more driven, hungry for justice angry side of us. [So] I don't know if doing a dark Superman is the approach, but I'm all for a reboot." But it was writer Steven T. Seagle who said it best. "'Dark?' 'Light?' Whatever. 'Good' is the main thing we're looking for when we plunk down our ten bucks."
WHAT ARE THE BEST EVER MOVIE MISHAPS AND MISTAKES? Aug 28, 2008 SexiVixxEN Other Welcome to one of the slowest news weeks of the year! Moviemistakes.com, surely one of the internet's leading sources of flubs in films, has compiled a list of the biggest mistakes in the history of movies. I like the concept, but the execution leaves much to be desired. As is so often the case with internet lists, the history of movies goes back about a decade or so, with a special mention of Star Wars. I have a hard time believing that the best bloopers in movies happened in the last ten years, but the site does have a fun list including some great pictures - including the shot above, my personal favorite mistake. I used to have my Star Wars VHS tape cued up to this spot. Many of the mistakes listed are continuity gaffes, which I have to admit I find a little boring. The more I learn about making movies the more I'm amazed that continuity errors are so few and far between. There's usually an amazing attention to detail on a movie set. Which is why my favorite mistakes are the ones where that attention just disintigrates. Moviemistakes.com has some great examples of cast members being caught in the shot - I especially like the guy in a cowboy hat over Jack Sparrow's shoulder in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Head over to moviemistakes.com to see their big list, and then come back to our message boards to discuss the best movie mistakes from before 1999.
Aaron Sorkin to Write "Facebook: The Movie" Aug 28, 2008 SexiVixxEN Other Writer Aaron Sorkin has announced on his recently created Facebook page that he will be writing a movie about the popular network site. Here is what he had to say: "I've just agreed to write a movie for Sony and producer Scott Rudin about how Facebook was invented. I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I've started this page. (Actually it was started by my researcher, Ian Reichbach, because my grandmother has more Internet savvy than I do and she's been dead for 33 years.) Some of you might be familiar with some things I've written. I'm the author of two Broadway plays--A Few Good Men and The Farnsworth Invention, five feature films--A Few Good Men, The American President, Malice, Charlie Wilson's War and The Trial of the Chicago 7 which is in pre-production, and three television series--Sports Night, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and the first four seasons of The West Wing." Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004, while he was still a student at Harvard University. Zuckerberg is now 24 years old and is said to be worth around $3 billion; Forbes Magazine declared him "[the] youngest billionaire on earth and possibly the youngest self-made billionaire ever." His company has been evaluated at $16 billion.
Kiss Angelina Jolie At Your Own Risk, ‘Changeling’ Co-Star Learns Aug 28, 2008 SexiVixxEN Other On a cold day last December, an actor playing a part against Angelina Jolie leaned over and kissed her. The only trouble was, it wasn’t in the script. “I try to be selective with my improvising,” said Jason Butler Harner, who is her co-star in Clint Eastwood’s upcoming “Changeling.” So he checked with the director first. “Clint approved,” he said. “He could see it happening and he said, ‘Do it and we’ll see what happens.’” Jolie was supposed to be pushing Harner against a wall. It was the movie’s climatic scene, and her character, Christine Collins, was supposed to be confronting his character, Gordon Stewart Northcott, and asking him, “Did you kill my son?” (The film is based on a true story; in the 1920s, Collins’ son was abducted, and another boy was “returned” to her instead. When she insisted that the second boy was not her son, she was deemed hysterical, when actually it was a case of LAPD corruption). “I had talked to her at the beginning of the day,” Harner said. “We had a big scene, and we’re supposed to be coming out of our corners, so it was a ‘How do we do this?’” Nowhere in that talk did he mention he was planning to lay one on her, however. But Eastwood approved because he likes to shoot and use things that actors don’t expect — a scene they might well believe is just a rehearsal, for instance. So for the big climax being shot the last week of a 35-day shoot, he wanted Jolie to be caught off guard — and she was. “She slapped me and she held me and she hit me and it was great,” Harner said. “She totally went with it. She’s really smart. She’s beautiful, but she’s really smart, and she’s a great actress.” The scene takes place in Northcott’s prison cell on the eve of his execution. “That guy invited the parents of the kids he killed to come the day before he was executed,” Harner said, “so he could tell them where the bodies were, or how he did it. But when they got there, he said, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ He was demented and deserved a lot of things [to be done to him]. Including a slap, at the very least.” Are you looking forward to this very dark Eastwood tale? Give your thoughts below.
‘Twilight’ Voted Most Anticipated Movie Of The Fall On Fandango Aug 28, 2008 SexiVixxEN Other It’s not “High School Musical 3.” It’s not the new James Bond flick, “Quantum of Solace,” either. It’s certainly no longer “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”* When asked the question “If you could choose only one movie to see in the theater in the next four months, which film would be your first choice?“ “Twilight,” the eagerly anticipated first movie to be adapted from Stephanie Meyer’s blockbuster series turned out, in fact, to be the MOST anticipated movie of the fall, according to a recent poll on movie website Fandango.com. “Twilight” was voted the number one most anticipated film by 34% of nearly 3,500 respondents, handily beating second place finisher “Quantum of Solace” (20%). “We are surprised by overwhelming buzz for ‘Twilight’ as the film to beat for the Fall,” Rick Butler, Fandango’s Chief Operating Officer, told MTV News. “Among all upcoming movies, ‘Twilight’ has consistently ranked among our top 3 most requested titles [the other two are ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Watchmen’]. Much of the anticipation has to do with the blockbuster novel, and moviegoers looking for a great fantasy in the fall. It appears to have a wide appeal, as parents are also looking for a film they can enjoy along with their teenagers.” Butler wasn’t kidding about the wide appeal, as “Twilight” scored big with nearly every demographic in the poll, according to Fandango spokesman Harry Medved. Interestingly, despite the fact that the novels are often considered strictly young-adult fiction, only 10% of respondents were 17 and younger. A much larger portion, meanwhile - 16%! - was OVER 50. (The largest chunk were between 25-49, a whopping 57%) Fans can begin to buy tickets for “Twilight” from Fandango as the release date (November 21) nears, hopefully within the month, Medved said. *For the record, “Potter” is already the most anticipated movie of 2009.

2 New Twilight Images Aug 28, 2008 SexiVixxEN Other The images just keep pouring in for one of the fall's hottest films. The Italian magazine BadTaste.it has posted two new images from Twilight, which hits theaters on November 21. Click below for a new image of Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart and a new shot of Burke Billy and Gil Birmingham Twilight is an action-packed, modern day love story between a vampire and a human. Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a little bit different, never caring about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. When her mother remarries and sends Bella to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn't expect much of anything to change. Then she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a boy unlike any she's ever met. Intelligent and witty, he sees straight into her soul. Soon, Bella and Edward are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance. Edward can run faster than a mountain lion, he can stop a moving car with his bare hands - and he hasn't aged since 1918. Like all vampires, he's immortal. But he doesn't have fangs, and he doesn't drink human blood; Edward and his family are unique among vampires in their lifestyle choice. To Edward, Bella is that thing he has waited 90 years for - a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. But what will Edward & Bella do when James (Cam Gigandet), Laurent (Edi Gathegi) and Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre), the Cullens' mortal vampire enemies, come to town, looking for her?
Hilary Swank is a Bad Best Friend Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other You think Hilary Swank would have learned her lesson after finding deep love that died way too early and left her with a suspenders scar. You'd also think she might be wary about her involvement in perky fare, since her forays into the genre haven't brought her as much success as her dramatic work. Guess not. Swank is going nuts scooping up projects to produce and star in. Earlier this month, she was looking at Fat, and now Variety reports that she wants to backstab her best friend. Along with producing partner Molly Smith she's grabbed Emily Giffin's debut novel, Something Borrowed. Instead of borrowing, say, a hairbrush, she's stealing her friend's man. This potential starring vehicle for the actress focuses on a "Manhattan attorney who becomes involved with her best friend's fiance following her 30th birthday." Yes, her best friend since elementary school. Oh, but before you think she's the only jerk -- the woman realizes she's in love with the man and sick of her manipulative friend. Wait. That's still jerky. The project is out to writers, and Swank has already practiced one unhappy-lookin face (look to the upper right).
News Bites: A 'Twilight' Star, Aleister Crowley, and Solondz Finds Funding Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other Here are some news bites for our long weekend: Ashley Greene has had a whirlwind of press lately, once she signed on to play Alice Cullen in Twilight. Now The Hollywood Reporter posts that she's signed onto an indie thriller called Summer. In it, she'll get another horror-themed family, but much less sexy than well-coifed, blood-sucking vampires. See, she plays a girl looking for the "father she's never known." And while that's always a risky adventure -- you never know what you'll find -- this is even more so because her family is a group of serial killers. The film is currently in production in Ottawa. Meanwhile, Variety reports that CMG has closed deals for Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson's Chemical Wedding. Starz/Anchor Bay are handing distribution in North America for the film that focuses on "the most evil man in Britain," Aleister Crowley. CMG President Edward Noeltner has noted about the big, Iron Maiden fan base eager to see the film, and I have to say -- I'd go see it for the experience. Forget a woman-filled theater of Sex and the City fans. Can you imagine a theater full of Maiden worshippers? And finally, there's some great news for Todd Solondz. As I outlined at the beginning of this year, the indie filmmaker has had some issues funding his work, which was leaving his PeeWee Herman-led Life During Wartime in limbo. But now Variety reports that a new indie production company, Werc Werk Works (yes, that's their name..), will fully finance the part-companion piece to Happiness. On the negative side, it looks like Mr. Reubens might be out of the production. (Variety says he was only rumored.) Whoever ends up starring, it is scheduled to go into production in October.
'Office' Writers Sell 'Bad Teacher' Spec to Sony Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other When two guys with a dozen episodes of The Office and an upcoming Judd Apatow project between them (that'd be next summer's biblical comedy Year One), I'd be willing to see what else they've got up their combined sleeve. For Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, that sleeve is home to Bad Teacher, the spec script that Columbia just picked up. According to Variety, the story concerns "a foul-mouthed, gold-digging seventh-grade teacher who's dumped by her sugar-daddy boyfriend and turns her attention toward a colleague. That pits her against a rival who happens to be the school's model teacher." So at the risk of sounding shallow, it sounds like the Bad Santa of all those inspirational teacher movies that Dana Marschz would hold dear -- the prospect of which, by the way, I'm totally down for. Now, what's going to be most critical here is the casting. At the moment, it's hard for me to not recommend Anna Faris for just about any part, although it'd be interesting to see her take on something a little more crass. What do you guys think? Who would you believe could not only land a job as a teacher, but then keep it in spite of harassing students (in the name of comedy, mind you)?
WB Kicks Tautou's 'Chanel' Into Gear Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other To me Coco Chanel is the woman responsible for my grandmother's smell -- the regal Chanel No. 5. To others she's the woman who created the suit unfortunately immortalized by the assassination of John F. Kennedy. And to the younger crowd, she'll soon be that movie character performed by Audrey Tautou in Coco Avant Chanel. The Amelie actress signed on to the film last year, but then all news stopped and it looked like Coco was going to be stuck in development hell, or at least have to wait a while longer. Now Variety reports that Warner Brothers has signed on to finance the feature and have got a plan all set. Production will start on September 15 in Paris, and should hit screens next year. The film will still be directed by Anne Fontaine, from the script by Anne, Camille Fontaine, and script consultant Christopher Hampton. Instead of spanning the woman's long and successful life, Tautou will get to delight in Coco's early years. And for you fashion fans out there -- Karl Lagerfeld, the art director of the House of Chanel, is supervising the wardrobe.

Olympic inspiration for John Woo Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hong Kong action auteur John Woo has been inspired by the Olympic Games to make a sports-themed film. In an innovative twist, the director aims to use real athletes as the key actors in the project. Though producing partner Terence Chang has played down Woo’s proclamation, delivered at a Beijing charity dinner, as “probably wishful thinking”, the Hong Kong legend appeared eager as he stated… “I have wanted to produce a sports-themed movie for some time now. I want real athletes to be my lead actors so that we can portray the athlete’s spirit accurately.” Considering the huge buzz around the recent Beijing Olympics and the vast medal haul taken by the host nation it’s unsurprising that Woo’s imagination has been captivated. The director of The Killer and Face/Off names double gold medal-winning diver Guo Jingjing and hurdling icon Liu Xiang as two ideal cast members, though he can effectively pick and choose with the amount of sporting talent available in China. Any Olympic endeavour won’t materialise until after the Hard-Boiled director has completed work on 1949, a historical epic based around the Communist revolution which is currently in pre-production. Woo is also set to make a sequel to Red Cliff, another historical feature set during the Han dynasty which has yet to receive its Western release. Though it seems to be very much an embryonic idea, the basic concept of casting athletes to give authentic credibility to a sports film is certainly interesting. Woo’s artistic handling of action cinema is legendary, and looking to genuine sports people to add a sense physical realism to things makes a lot of sense. Acting-wise, Woo may even manage to convert an Asian athlete towards a career in acting to follow the trajectory of O.J. Simpson and Vinnie Jones as two examples. If this can be pulled together, a release around the London Olympics in 2012 would be ideal and would no doubt serve as a rousing rally cry for the Chinese nation as it seeks to defend its dominance at the apex of the athletic world.
Summer Box Office 2008: Kung Fu Critics Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other When he found me I was unconscious, slumped over my keyboard with a trail of dried spittle running from the spacebar, across the alt key, and into my mouth. I was still, except for my right hand, attached to a mouse and clicking furiously. I had forgotten to stop Digging, before allowing myself to pass out. “Wake up!” shouted Scott. “Must friend MrBabyMan,” I muttered… until he started shaking me. My eyes fluttered open and I suddenly realized there was someone in the room with me. The Dark Knight Scott: If you don’t know what movie was the biggest at the box office this summer, you’ve had your head in the sand. It doesn’t matter what news source you read, everything from MSNBC to The Wall Street Journal has had something to say about the record breaking cash cow that is The Dark Knight. Shattering all the major box-office records and knocking off Star Wars to become the second highest grossing movie in U.S. history, the only thing it couldn’t do was reach Titanic’s daunting totals ($600 million domestic and an astounding $1.2 billion foreign). Maybe it could have happened if Batman had spread his arms whilst standing atop one of Gotham’s highest buildings shouting “I’m King of the World”. When you add up all the cash Dark Knight has raked in the total hits $872 million, giving Warner Brothers a tidy return on their hefty $185 million investment in the film. And the international sales are still climbing. A $700 million profit and rising, it’s the most profitable movie of the year. Meet Dave Scott: Everyone’s always buzzing over which movie made the most money every summer. But what about the one that lost the most? If you’re interested in finding out which of Hollywood’s stars have become irrelevant, how much money their movies lose is usually a good indicator. This year the box office’s biggest money sucker was Meet Dave and the award for biggest box office loser goes to poor Eddie Murphy. Meet Dave wasn’t all that expensive to make, racking up a relatively meager budget of $60 million. When you add up both the domestic and international sales it earned less than $20 million. I suppose Murphy could take solace in the fact last year’s Norbit raked in close to $100 million in profit, but he would also have to accept that the only comedy where people will pay to watch him is one where he’s dressed up as a nasty, giant, fat woman
Stiller Spoofs Superheroes With RDJ And Tina Fey Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other Tina Fey and Robert Downey Jr. are teaming up to lampoon the superhero genre. Hollywood Insider says they’re both likely to join the voice cast of a new DreamWorks animated movie called Master Mind. Master Mind’s plot reminds sounds a lot like it ought to be the next chapter in the adventures of Joss Whedon's Dr. Horrible, but it's actually the latest from Mr. Furious. It’s about a villain who defeats his archrival… and subsequently loses his will to live. The best news here is that it’s being produced by Ben Stiller who has some experience taking potshots at the superhero genre. Anyone remember Mystery Men? So underrated. The world does need more Mr. Furious. Cancel this thing and just give us a Mystery Men II Ben.
Ron Livingston Heads Back To The Office Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other Ron Livingston's most famous role was set in a deadening office years before The Office made it hip, so it makes sense that he's returning to the well with his next movie. He'll star in the indie comedy The Company Men, which Variety describes as the story of "an aging businessman who struggles with a collapsing economy as he tries to save a sinking company." Wow, doesn't that sound hilarious? Of course, there probably didn't seem to be a lot of comedy potential in the story of depressed office workers and a T.G.I Friday's waitress, which might explain why Office Space got treated so poorly when it was released. Maybe with the passage of time and the cult status of Office Space, whoever releases Company Men will recognize the appeal of seeing Ron Livingston as a sad office sack. Maybe it won't be a stretch, but damn if that's not what he's good at.
Matilda Is Ready to Run and Dance the Day Away Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other Michelle Williams and Matilda went out for a walk in New York yesterday, but it doesn't look like Matilda needs any of mom's coffee to get her energy going. She showed off her sprinting skills, giving mom Michelle a little exercise too, taking off down the street in her pink dress all ready for ballet class just like another 2-year-old we know. Looks like Matilda's off and running these days, showing off her mom and dad's independent spirits passed down already.
Hari Puttar: The new controversy by Warner Brothers Aug 28, 2008 alemagico Other First WB changes the date of Potter, and now wants to fight a demand on an indian movie called Hari Puttar: Comedy of Terrors. This movie is a copy of 'Home Alone' and has nothing to do with Potter at all. Sme say WB insist that this movie has similarities. For example, the name...then the kid, and then his age (10 to 11), but the story is more like HOME ALONE. I just saw the trailer, and is based on an indian kid who moved to London to see how is living there, and he confronts trouble when 2 mens try to get on his house. If you have seen HOME ALONE, then you know the rest of the story. What else WB which to interfier next? Who knows....
Tom Cruise To Return To Top Gun 2? Aug 28, 2008 stopitgoaway Other It seems that I write about Tom Cruise on a daily basis. I see some people in the comments page ask if I’m being serious, or just sarcastic when I talk about “The Cruiser.” Well to be honest, it’s a bit of both. I feel that Cruise is a great movie star, but he has made some bad PR choices in the last couple of years. He’s not a bad actor, it’s just that tabloid journalism has gotten a bit crazy. No - strike that, tabloid journalism has gotten really, really crazy and they will pretty much hammer anyone in the public eye. Poor Tom played right into their hands, and as a result his career has taken a bit of a hit. However, he hasn’t really had an all out bomb - Lions for Lambs was a co-starring role akin to his Magnolia role, and even MI:III earned good bank. Which brings me to news of a possible Top Gun sequel.
"He's Just Not That Into You" Poster Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other A teaser poster for the upcoming comedy "He's Just Not That Into You" has been released, showing the title of the movie with an impressive cast list, which consists of Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, Justin Long, Jennifer Connelly, Drew Barrymore, Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper. The Baltimore-set movie of interconnecting story arcs deals with the challenges of reading or misreading human behavior. "He's Just Not That Into You" is directed by Ken Kwapis, the man behind "The Office." The new movie was recently pushed back to February 6th, 2009.
Vince Vaughn's "Four Christmases" Poster Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other A photo of the poster for the upcoming comedy "Four Christmases," starring Vince Vaughn (Old School) and Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line), has been released. It features a shot of the two tied together, with the tagline stating: "His father, her mother, his mother and her father all in one day." The new movie revolves around a couple struggling to visit all four of their divorced parents on Christmas Day. Jon Favreau and Tim McGraw will play Dallas and Denver, respectively, two bullying siblings who delight in tormenting their brother, Brad (Vaughn), during the holidays. Dwight Yoakam will play Pastor Phil, the overly zealous partner of Brad's new wife Kate's (Witherspoon) mother (Mary Steenburgen). He persuades the young couple to act in his church's nativity play, one of many chaotic events during their visits to different sets of parents. Sissy Spacek, Kristin Chenoweth and Robert Duvall also star. "Four Christmases" is scheduled to hit theaters on November 26th.
"Wall-E" to Appear on DVD and Blu-ray in November Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other THR has learned that the latest Pixar hit, "Wall-E," will be released in stores on November 18th, on both DVD and Blu-ray. The CG-animated film, which grossed $214.1 million in US theaters, will be available in single-disc and triple-disc versions. The triple-disc comes with a suite of special features about the film's robot heroes, including web vignettes and an interactive storybook, and a detailed documentary on Pixar. Both releases also include a digital copy of the film, playable on mobile devices. The story plays 700 years in the future when Wally is a little robot on Earth cleaning the trash-covered planet after the humans evacuated it.
Haley Joel Osment is Still Acting Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other David Mamet's "American Buffalo" is headed back on stage and has now cast Haley Joel Osment (Forrest Gump, AI), who will be making his Broadway debut. The 20-year-old actor, who was an Academy Award nominee for "The Sixth Sense," joins John Leguizamo and Cedric the Entertainer in the revival that opens November 17th at the Belasco Theatre. Preview performances begin October 31st. "American Buffalo," which is a robbery tale set in a Chicago junk shop, will be directed by Robert Falls of Chicago's Goodman Theatre. The first time the play opened was in New York on February 16th, 1977 and had 122 performances. Robert Duvall played Teach, Kenneth McMillan played Don and John Savage played Bobby. Al Pacino also played Teach from 1981-1984.
Mark Wahlberg Says Max Payne > The Dark Knight Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other Another morning on Slashfilm, another Kid Icarus in Hollywood. …I have doubts.”

The Lowdown on 'The Descent 2' Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other Usually when an original creator walks away from a sequel, it is a good sign that maybe a sequel isn't the best idea to begin with. Well, that's exactly what happened with the follow-up to Neil Marshall's 2005 horror-hit, The Descent. But it is not all bad news because Shock Till You Drop got the chance for a set-visit, and by the sounds of things it's looking pretty good for our group of traumatized spelunkers. (You can read the about the full visit over at Shock.) The sequel picks up where the first film left off (that is if you are following the events of the North American release of the original film). The story follows the return of a mute and unbalanced Sarah as she heads back down to the caves with a rescue party to locate the rest of her group. Of course, this being the ricketiest cave on earth, the group is soon trapped and left to deal with the nasties down below. During the visit, Shock spoke with writer James Watkins (My Little Eye) as well as the production designer Simon Bowles. Watkins told Shock that they went to Marshall to "get his feedback and discuss which direction he wanted the story to go, what he thought was good, how we should develop the characters" -- not to mention there was the promise of plenty of more gore this time around, and in the end isn't that what we're paying for? Scott told us back in 2007 that Marshall hadn't completely washed his hands of the whole thing, and would still produce the flick. Well, I guess he's a little more hands-on than expected -- which is probably a very good thing, don't you think? The Descent 2 will arrive in theaters in 2009.
Comic Creators Respond to Warner Bros' 'Dark Superman' Idea Aug 28, 2008 Petes1234567 Other It seems the entire comic book and film world "misread" Warner Bros' announcement that they were angling to make Superman's reboot a gloomier one. No one seems to have read the original article slowly enough -- not even MTV, Kevin Smith, Christopher Golden, Jeph Loeb, Steven T. Seagle, or Mark Waid. The wonderful geeks over on MTV's Splash Page chased down all the above, and asked them what they thought about the studio's latest plans for the Man of Steel. The funniest and most extreme reaction isn't Smith's, it's Golden's! "How stupid is that? That announcement made my head spin . . . Making a dark and gritty Superman movie because Dark Knight made a ton of money is incredibly stupid." Oddly, Smith is actually more tempered in his comments, and that he was all for a reboot. "You always have to always keep Superman very distinct from Batman ... Superman is about the hope in people, the good in people, whereas Batman is about the more driven, hungry for justice angry side of us. [So] I don't know if doing a dark Superman is the approach." The lone dissenting voice is Seagle, not surprising from the man who penned It's a Bird ... and feels that Superman has always been a dark character. "Heroic struggles are basically all dark in tone. The idea of 'villains' implies something bad happening to good people most of the time, and that's dark. Heroes look brighter emerging from dire consequence successfully." Ultimately, I think Waid's the man who speaks for the majority of us in arguing that you can make Superman's world darker, but not the character, who's "a creature of hope." If Warner Bros goes in that direction, I can get behind it. A bright and shining Superman against a depraved and unjust world might be just what the reboot ordered.
